The Dean Times

A one-sheet newspaper my home server writes and prints for me at 6 am, covering AI labs, Australian startups and finance.

The front page of The Dean Times, with a blackletter masthead above columns of stories, market prices and paper plane instructions.

The brief

I wanted the news I follow printed on one page and waiting for me each morning. It had to run on the small NUC PC I already have at home, use my wifi printer and not cost anything.

The solution

At 6am the NUC grabs stories from the sources I picked - AI labs, Australian startups, Australian finance and Hacker News. It adds the markets and the weather, lays it out like an old newspaper and prints one A4 sheet, front and back.

I built it with Claude in an evening. I told it what I wanted and it did the work on the NUC. The first version had 35 stories on it, which was too many articles and not enough information, so we cut it back to one main story per section and one-liners for the rest.

What it solves

I get the news I care about in one place, on paper, without going through a bunch of sites. It also puts the NUC to use overnight when it’s on anyway.

What’s next

Running a small AI model on the NUC overnight to summarise the longer articles.

There’s more on how it works in this note.
